Our Role
London Charing Cross Station is the fifth busiest National Rail station in the UK, with over 36 million passenger entries and exits each year. Network Rail has identified the long-term need to relieve congestion at the station during peak periods, with a view to the introduction of longer trains on the Southeastern network.
Movement Strategies was commissioned to deliver a comprehensive survey of crowd movement through the station. The findings of the survey were used in a capacity assessment of the current station layout and to test the potential benefits of Network Rail’s short and long term options for improvement.
What we brought to the Project
Through careful specification of the passenger flow survey, we were able to gain considerable insights about the behaviour of people as they pass through Charing Cross Station. As well as information about origins and destinations, we were able to provide information on journey times, the proportion of people using station facilities and the time spent by people within the concourse.
Our use of static analysis techniques, tailored to the passenger behaviour observed at Charing Cross, indicated how the station infrastructure capacity performs against Network Rail’s guideline targets. The static analysis was also able to show the benefits that would result from proposed changes to the station concourse, and we were able to recommend which options should be implemented or progressed to the next stage of design.
Client’s feedback
“Movement Strategies carried out a very thorough and professional pedestrian flow survey on Charing Cross station. This survey became the basis for the
pedestrian planning
analysis which provided valuable additional insights and helped considerably the subsequent decision making process. The presentations and the report were prepared in a clear and professional manner within the agreed timescales and under the agreed budget.”
