The Chelsea Flower Show is the most famous and prestigious flower show in the world. It has been held annually in the beautiful grounds of the Royal Hospital since 1913. The space at this historic site is limited, so that there are competing demands for the space available for gardens, exhibits, catering, retailers, sponsors and visitors.

Over the years the success of the Show had led to crowding that was detracting from the visitor experience and reputation of the event. Movement Strategies was engaged to help make the Show more comfortable for visitors while maintaining visitor numbers. We were also asked to enhance emergency procedures and make them more robust.

 

What we did:

We analysed how the number of visitors had changed, and found that while the Show had become more crowded visitor numbers had in fact decreased.  Then we looked at the way that the layout of the Show and visitor behaviour had changed over the long term. The findings of this analysis led to the development of new design principles for the way the Show was arranged.

Our audit of the emergency plans led to a change in procedures and an increase in the location and width of emergency exits. All these changes were seen as highly successful by the RHS and the authorities, and most importantly the visitors. The measured reputation of the Show increased in the years following the changes.

The work achieved a very significant Return on Investment and the knowledge gained will underpin planning for all the Shows organised by RHS around the country.
