Internal Shelter and Emergency Procedures
Client: John Lewis Partnership
Our role:
In 2005, the John Lewis Partnership moved Partners from other buildings in London into its refurbished headquarters in two buildings in central London
The Partnership recognised that with a high.er population and new Partners who were unfamiliar with their surroundings they would need to revamp their emergency procedures and training. The refurbishment also offered the opportunity to make any changes to the building necessary to support the upgraded procedures.
JLP asked Movement Strategies, to help develop its Internal Shelter strategy and make existing emergency procedures more effective.
What we brought to the project:
Evacuation Strategies applied its Emergency Systems Audit approach to ensure that all aspects of the 'system' needed to make evacuation or shelter procedures are individually robust and work together, and are in line with industry best practice. This included:
- Analysis of the building layout and population density at different times of day
- Audit of evacuation routes, signage and command and control procedures
- Interviews with key personnel
- Observations from a desktop exercise and evacuation drills
As a result of our involvement JLP upgraded its crisis procedures including:
- Reduced the evacuation time from 8 minutes to 6 minutes
- Upgraded its communications and Public Address systems
- Revamped the signage within the building
- Significantly enhanced training procedures
