Our Role:

The London Aquatics Centre is an iconic venue for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and is located at the ‘gateway’ to the Olympic Park. Two large temporary stands have been added to the venue for the Games increasing its capacity from 5,000 to 17,500. Movement Strategies were engaged as crowd movement consultants to the venue team, led by Balfour Beatty and architect Zaha Hadid.

What we brought to the project:

The design required careful consideration to accommodate the significantly increased visitor numbers, including a high level of provision for wheelchair users and their companions. Another challenge was to ensure that there were segregated routes and a good level of service for Olympic Family, Athletes, Media and other VIP groups.

Our crowd simulations were used to test designs and management strategies to reduce the times taken to enter and leave the venue for all user groups, and then to demonstrate the performance of the venue to the authorities and other stakeholders.
