The World Ski Championships in 2011 were the biggest public event in Norway since the Winter Olympics in 1994. The Organising Committee organised a test event at the new Holmenkollen complex, which featured both the Ski Jump and the Cross-Country-skiing course, and asked Movement Strategies to help it prepare for this.
What we did:
We created a tool to forecast demand for use by the Oslo2011 management team to predict the number of spectators arriving and departing Holmenkollen and circulating between the two venues throughout the event. This was used to help plan security, ticketing, stewarding and transport.
Then we created computer simulations for the movement of spectators within the complex, based on different assumptions to test the performance of the venue. This work highlighted areas to a need to increase width and capacity of circulation routes and was also used to seek additional funding.
“The simulations have been extremely useful … It has given us some clear signals about where we need to go and look for improvements, now the arena is being used for the first time for the FIS World Cup”
Jørgen Aass, Crowd Manager, FIS Nordic World Ski Championships
Our team attended the test event and took measurements relating to spectator movement to help plan 2011.
