Scottish parliament Inclusive Design

Our role:

“Physical accessibility has been integral to the Holyrood design from the very outset.  Every effort has been made to ensure that disabled people will be able to access and use Scotland’s Parliament building with ease and independence.

Disability issues are a matter of human rights and barriers to the democratic process are inexcusable.  Our access consultants, who have worked closely with our design team, are confident that Holyrood will be one of the most physically accessible Parliaments in the world.”

Scottish Parliament Presiding Officer George Reid.

All areas of the building were designed to be accessible, and every element within the Parliament building was considered from an access perspective. Margaret Hickish worked as an integral part of the Design Team, working closely with the architects advising on all inclusive design issues to create a fully accessible building.

The building had many unique design features, and as so our consultant Margaret Hickish was involved in the accessible design of stair handrails, ironmongery, toilet layouts, the debating chamber desks and voting systems, as well as key features of the MSP offices and meeting / committee rooms. Refreshment areas, furniture specifications, sanitary facilities, and security screening equipment were also advised on to ensure that the Parliament building is as accessible as possible.

The European Union has in fact commented that it will be ‘the most accessible building in Europe'

Sixty-one out of 130 seats in the main debating chamber have step free access, ensuring wheelchair users and people with mobility impairments can take their place at the forefront of democracy.
