London Marathon Station Surveys - Movement Strategies

Summary of Services:

  • Event-day Pedestrian Surveys
  • Train Boarding and Alighting Patterns

Our role:

The London Marathon is one of the largest mass-participation athletics events in the world, and has been held each spring in London since 1981. In 2011, more than 36,000 runners took part in the event, which starts at Greenwich Park and ends in the Mall.

Movement Strategies was appointed by Southeastern Railway to carry out surveys of crowd movement, passenger entries/exits and boarding and alighting patterns at Greenwich, Blackheath and Maze Hill Stations on the morning of the 2011 London Marathon.

As well as providing useful information for the annual management challenges associated with the Marathon, the data will also be used to assist with preparations for the Equestrian events at Greenwich Park during the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

What we brought to the project:

Our survey team were brought in to the project on short notice, and during a period when one of the three stations was undergoing significant construction work.

We were able to specify the appropriate methodology for the collection of data by meeting with operational station staff to fully understand their event-day plans. We deployed manual count staff and video cameras to ensure that all of the client’s information needs were captured in the most cost-effective manner.

All data was quality checked for consistency, and accompanied by observational comments to explain any unexpected or unusual results.
