Our role:
St Pancras Station will be the Central London terminal of the Javelin rail service transporting spectators to/from the Olympic Park during the London 2012 Olympic Games. On the busiest days of the Games, it is anticipated that more than 80,000 spectators will pass through St Pancras.
Movement Strategies were engaged by Network Rail to advise on the queuing and management strategy required to accommodate the increased demand within the station, whilst maintaining ‘business as usual’ for other users of the station and neighbouring sites.
Subsequently we were asked to develop new simulations of the station, incorporating the Event Day Operations plans we developed
What we brought to the project:
Throughout the project, our strategy development was overseen by a stakeholder group including the Olympic Delivery Authority, station managers from St Pancras, Kings Cross, and London Underground, and Camden Council and local landowners. By drawing on the information they provided and their perspectives on operational constraints, we were able to:
- Review the existing crowd simulations.
- Define the peak demand scenarios to be addressed by the strategy.
- Develop models to calculate queuing levels given the forecast demand for travel and the timetabled train service capacity.
- Identify and assess alternative queuing footprints and management arrangements.
- Develop a network model of the station and surrounding walkways to enable station infrastructure capacity assessments of peak scenarios.
- Select a preferred strategy.
The outcomes of our work were used as a framework for the development of Operational Plans.
We have subsequently developed new Legion dynamic simulation models of the station and surrounding area showing the management strategy in operation, and its performance, during the three most critical time periods.
