The Great North Run is the world's biggest half-marathon, with 54,000 entrants participating each year. Movement Strategies were engaged by Nova International, the event organisers, to assist with the safe control and assembly of the participants before the start of the race. The particular challenge is related to the nature of the start area – situated on a stretch of motorway bounded by steep embankments on either side.

 

What we did:

We developed a workshop, focusing on risk assessment, to help design the start layout. First implemented in 2006, the arrangement of the start layout was considered a success and has formed the basis for subsequent editions of the race.
