The O2
Client: AEG Europe
Pedestrian Planning & Design
Our role:
The O2 is the world’s most successful music and entertainment venue. It includes a 20,000 capacity arena, an 11-screen cinema, two exhibition galleries and restaurants and clubs.
The operators of the site, AEG Europe, were seeking to submit a planning application to introduce a number of additional venues. Movement Strategies were commissioned to review the designs for the layout of the expanded facility, and to assess whether there would be sufficient capacity to accommodate the additional pedestrian demand.
What we brought to the project:
We undertook the following activities:
- Monitoring and observation of pre-expansion pedestrian flow
- Development of demand forecasts associated with the future venues
- Definition of Design Standards
- Review of design proposals of new walkways and circulation areas
- Capacity analysis of routes to assess the future crowd densities
Our report included recommendations to alleviate capacity constraints through the removal of street furniture and alternative management strategies to be employed at critical times. The report was used to support AEG’s planning application.
