It is the shared experience of the crowd that makes Festivals memorable, and for festival organisers ensuring crowd safety is fundamental.
Once this is assured then the other objectives for the delivery of the festival can be considered - creating a great experience and maximising capacity or gaining licence approval.
Movement Strategies are specialists in Designing for Crowd Safety at festivals. We take a quantitative approach to the assessment of crowd dynamics to help organisers design the site and the event so that it is safer and easier for their safety and security teams to manage.
The outcomes of our work also improve visitor experience, for example reducing queues, which in turn can increase visitor spend.
Our experience, of high-density crowd environments, means that we understand how crowd behaviour and movement is affected by factors as diverse as the weather, ground conditions, signage and knowledge of the event. We include these factors in bespoke crowd safety risk assessments to formally identify the key risks, and determine where further actions are needed.
Our work is often used by organisers to support licence applications to local safety authorities and emergency services, particularly when capacities are increased or there are significant changes to the site.
In an operational role we can provide safety and security leadership or management support as part of the management team.
Alternatively we sometimes act as independent 'authorities' and observe the festival, measuring aspects of crowd flow or visitor experience. This can be invaluable in describing the way the festival works from the point of view of the festival-goers and over time can improve safety and experience. We are able to report on the success of changes and help plan for the following night or the following year.
