Crowds are synonymous with sporting events. The convergence of large numbers of people on a single location creates the atmosphere that sports fans enjoy, but also defines the need for strategies that ensure visitor safety and access to and from the venue.
Movement Strategies are recognised specialists in crowd planning of stadia and major sporting events. Our track record includes our role as crowd advisors to the London 2012 Organising Committee and the Olympic Delivery Authority – ensuring that the Olympic Park is able to safely and comfortably accommodate the anticipated number of spectators.
At the venue level, Movement Strategies provides advice throughout the development of new-build stadia, as well as auditing or refurbishing existing facilities. We are able to set design parameters and enhance designs, and to assist operational personnel in shaping their crowd management strategies. In terms of outcomes, we provide support to the development of designs, the submission of planning applications and throughout the safety certification process.
For street or public space events we are able to set design parameters and enhance designs, to review proposals and to assist operational personnel in shaping their crowd management strategies. In terms of outcomes, we provide support to the development of designs, the submission of planning applications and throughout the safety certification process. This applies equally to street or public space sports events.
We also have specific expertise in the wider sporting context, providing advice on the design, layout and operation of Fan Parks and Spectator Services.
Our recent work for Tottenham Hotspur FC and for the FIFA Club World Cup has shown the importance of assessing the movement of crowds outside the stadium perimeter. The movement of spectators to and from the venue creates challenges for the local transport network and for walkways and businesses within the local vicinity. We use a range of tools and techniques to assess the potential impacts of these flows, and to develop recommendations for a comprehensive matchday overlay.
