For many events it is the presence of crowds that make it memorable – the shared experience and interaction of tens or hundreds of thousands of people.
Crowds can be exciting or dangerous or both at the same time. For the operators of ‘crowd places and spaces’ ensuring crowd safety is the most fundamental concern. Once crowd safety is assured then other objectives for the delivery of the event or venue can be considered – such as maximising capacity, creating a great experience or minimising build costs.
What is a crowd?
We define a crowd by the presence of many people in one place with similar objectives, and at crowd densities where an individual's personal space, comfort and mood, and freedom to move are influenced by the others around them. Crowds are distinct from pedestrians, and crowd dynamics is distinct from pedestrian planning.
High crowd densities introduce new risks to crowd safety and exacerbate others. For example, the presence of a crowd may increase the probability of tripping because individuals cannot see a trip hazard, and the severity of this hazard increases in a crowd because it may affect more than one person. There are crowd disasters around the world that have led to multiple deaths arising from a slip or trip.
Movement Strategies is a specialist in planning for high-density crowd events and venues. We have helped improve crowd safety in some of the most demanding crowd environments in the world including religious events, festivals and concerts, street events, and major sports events attended by hundreds of thousands or millions of people. We have also saved many of our clients millions of dollars as a result of our work, and one client has saved hundreds of millions of pounds.
Our work is based on analysis, understanding of crowd dynamics, and practical experience of high-density crowds in large events.
What is crowd dynamics?
Crowd dynamics includes the relationships between crowd density, walk speed, crowd flow rates and comfort. It also includes other factors influencing a crowd’s movement and behaviour such as the visitors’ knowledge of the place and the information given to them, and their demographic profile. Behaviour may also be influenced by external factors such as the weather. These considerations must be taken into account in designing and planning crowd events or venues.
A good understanding of crowd dynamics is also needed to use and interpret dynamic crowd simulations.
