Movement Strategies has extensive experience in planning and conducting surveys to provide reliable information on the volumes and characteristics of pedestrian flows. Our collection of robust data and subsequent analysis has supported clients in different sectors including major events, transport, sport stadiums and building design.

Pedestrian and crowd surveys are carried out in order to capture pedestrian volumes and profiles; origins and destinations; use of modes; and journey objectives. These provide the baseline information for any capacity assessment, design specification or crowd simulation. The information is often used to inform significant capital investments and it is essential that surveys are correctly specified, carried out to high quality, and robustly analysed.

For example, at Charing Cross Station - the UK’s fifth busiest rail station with over 36m passengers per year - we collected data on the volume of people using the station and their routes between platforms and entrances/exits. The information collected was used to inform an Options Appraisal for future capital investment.

Movement Strategies plans surveys that are tailored to the client’s project specification and budget. We work with trusted, professional and experienced survey companies as well as using our own staff. Our methods range from simple manual counts to the use of High-Definition digital video capture and the deployment of GPS journey trackers.
