Pedestrian Planning & Design is an industry term and the title of the ‘set text’ by Professor John J Fruin for, in his words “planning and design of building and street spaces for comfortable and convenient human use”. It describes much of what we do.
For buildings and spaces where people assemble or move in large numbers pedestrian planning and design is of strategic importance rather than a technical consideration. It affects safety, operational performance, financial results and an organisation’s reputation. For example, the purpose of metro and rail transit systems is to facilitate the safe movement of large numbers of people efficiently: the size and design of the stations must trade off capacity and build costs. For venues and events maximising capacity maximises ticket, retail, and advertising revenue.
Movement Strategies applies a robust and tested methodology for assessing or designing for pedestrian movement in any building, space or street network. Our objectives are to make the place work as intended - with the minimum of operational management - and to be safe, comfortable to use, and easy to navigate. We also seek to make the design efficient thereby reducing costs and freeing up space for other uses – such as retail or supporting development.
