Wimbledon Master Plan

Advising on visitor flow patterns for The Championships, Wimbledon

Background

Movement Strategies was appointed by The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) to provide specialist crowd and people movement design input for the Master Plan of the home of The Championships, Wimbledon. To develop a long-term vision for the Wimbledon Grounds, with the intention of maintaining its reputation as the pre-eminent tennis tournament in the world. Our specific role was to ensure that the design proposals were capable of supporting the visitor movement patterns associated with The Championships, providing a platform for an enhanced experience for visitors as they move to, from, and around the site.

WhAT WE DID

We undertook a comprehensive fact finding and data collection exercise in the run up to and during The Championships, 2013. Post-Championships, our analysis focused on several topics (including Circulation and Perimeter Access), summarising existing operations and behaviour, and developing recommendations for design and management within the Master Plan context.

Our input shaped many elements of the design, including the location, size and layout of facilities and courts, as well as the walkways connecting them.

RESULTS

The Master Plan was unveiled in April 2014 and provides a strategic vision for the development of the site over the coming years.
